My Ojibwe name is Nenaaw. I am known as Charles Smith. I was raised in the village Bapashkominitig, the bald island on Fond du Lac. Elders taught me how to speak Ojibwe and teach me about our way of life as Ojibwe people. The little that I have come to understand the Ojibwe language and culture primarily comes from Mille Lacs. I started learning the Ojibwe language when I was 19 years old. The veterans from my community encouraged me to learn my language to speak at the Veteran’s Pow Wow and the Veteran Memorials. That’s how I was given the ability to get up and speak for people, open meetings and to use tobacco.

I am from the Sisseton Wahpeton-Oyate tribe in South Dakota, I am of Ojibwe and Oglala Sioux descent. I grew up on the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe reservation . I am a father and enjoy spending as much time with my family as possible.

I am from the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewas. For most of my life I grew up on the Fond Du Lac reservation. I have a background in construction and retail. I enjoy being outdoors and have a love for music.
